Planning and anticipating your upcoming vacation is almost as much fun as the vacation itself. However, don't leave the safety of your home out of your planning. Nothing can spoil your vacation more than returning to a home that has been burglarized. Even if you live in an out-of-the-way area, that doesn't guaranty immunity from thieves. Some burglars look for homes in secluded spots precisely because of this seclusion. It makes their "work" easier when fewer people are around to catch them. Here are some security measures that can help prevent a home invasion while you're away.
Park Your Car Out of Sight
Keep the car you intend to use for your vacation out of sight for a few weeks before you go. This means parking it in the garage or farther down the road. When you leave with your car on your vacation, external appearances at home will not have changed.
Install a Security Alarm System
Few thieves will want to stick around after they've tripped a security alarm. The audible alarm attracts attention and thieves know that most alarms automatically notify a security center. Don't forget to place stickers that advertise your security system on your windows. It's best to deter a thief before he trips your alarm.
Use a Timer in Your Home
Get a timer that turns lights on and off while you're away. Make sure the pattern mimics your normal activity so it looks as though someone is home. Leaving lights constantly on isn't a substitute for a timer because it inflates your electric bill and won't mimic normal lighting changes.
Stop Your Mail Delivery
A mailbox stuffed with mail is a tip-off that no one is home. Ask the post office to place a hold on your mail while you're away. If you are getting your paper delivered, place a hold on that too. An alternative is to ask a trusted neighbor, friend or family member to collect your mail on your behalf.
Keep Your Lawn Mowed
A home with a lawn that resembles a small wheat field doesn't have that lived-in look. If you will be away for longer than a week, contract a lawn mowing service to mow your lawn weekly.
Keep Your Home Insurance Up to Date
While the previous tips were preventative measures, getting coverage for your home and possessions is a backup measure just in case you become the victim of a home invasion. It's upsetting enough to have your home broken into, but suffering from a financial disaster is worse. If your home insurance hasn't been updated recently, contact your independent insurance agent to review your policy.
